Can we carry musical instruments in flight?

Airlines usually allow to curry a smaller instrument, such as a violin or guitar, to be stowed on board as carry-on baggage, as long as there's room in the overhead storage racks or under your seat at the time of boarding.

In some cases, depending on the instrument an extra seat is required.
